On Sunday
night Solway were at the Dundee Ice Arena to play the Dundee
Texol Stars and unfortunately they did not make a good start to
the game. From the opening face-off Mark Gallagher made a good
interception and received a return pass from Bari McKenzie
before firing in a good shot. The rebound fell to Latto who fed
Marshall on the left wing, he then drifted across goal and
lifted his shot over the diving Dewar Anderson to open the
scoring. On the five minute mark Robbie Brown chased down what
should have been an easy Dundee clearance and forced a defensive
error which allowed the Sharks two shots in quick succession but
Michie in the Stars goal was alert to both. A powerplay in the
sixth minute allowed Haig the room to find Robertson on the
Sharks goal-line and he scored from a tight angle. The Stars
scored again in the fifteenth minute when Marshall broke from
defense and finding Dolan in support he gave his team mate an
easy finish with a well timed pass. Thirty seconds from the
first interval a Struan Tonnar pass from defense found Mark
Gallagher on the right wing and his perfectly weighted pass
allowed Bari McKenzie to smash the puck home from ten yards top
make it three-one at the first interval.
Six minutes
into the second period the Sharks gave their travelling support
cause for hope when Robbie Brown fed Shaun Kippin behind the
goal, he passed back out to Corrie Telfer who lifted his shot
back over Michie to score Solway’s second goal. Two penalties
around the mid-way point gave Dundee a five on three powerplay
and, after a good double save by Anderson from Haig, the second
rebound found Dolan with an empty net ahead. Three minutes later
a period of extended Stars pressure finally saw Carnegie and
Holmes set up Doig in clear ice five yards from goal and Dundee
had their fifth score of the night. Two minutes from the second
break penalties against each side saw the sides four against
four on the ice. Fraser Goldie used the extra space to find John
Downes on the Dundee blueline and he thundered a shot passed
Michie to bring the scores to five-three in the home sides
favour.
Any hope of a
Sharks revival was quickly snubbed out at the beginning of the
third period when Dundee went straight on the attack and got
their reward when McCluskey played the puck back out to ex-Shark
Bob Chalmers who easily lifted his shot past the keeper. A
penalty for too many men on the ice gave the Stars the powerplay
that led to their seventh goal. Chalmers and Marshall played the
puck around patiently behind the Sharks goal before setting up
Dolan to score from close range. Thirty seconds later Solway did
get one moment of third period joy when Euan Edgar won
possession on the right-hand boards, cut along the goal line and
shot into the net off the back off Michie’s pads. However, it
was Dundee who wound up the scoring in the fifty-second minute
when Latto and Robertson stretched the tiring Sharks before
setting up Haig to score from close to goal.
The Sharks
scoring statistics were as follows: Bari McKenzie, Corrie
Telfer, John Downes and Euan Edgar all one goal and no assists,
Mark Gallagher, Struan Tonnar, Shaun Kippin, Robbie Brown and
Fraser Goldie all 0+1. Dewar Anderson in the Sharks goal saved
forty-four of the fifty-two shots that he faced (save percentage
84.62%). Man of the match for the Sharks was awarded to Dewar
Anderson while Sam McCluskey picked up that honour for the
Stars.
