The
Solway Sharks, sponsored by the Black Bull of Moffat, travelled to
Dundee Ice Arena last Saturday night to compete in the Northern
League play-off finals. Sharks faced off against the Whitley
Warriors in the first semi-final and proceeded to find themselves
four-nil down by the mid-way point of the match. Solway finally woke
up with a late surge to make a game of it but it was too little, too
late, as Whitley finished on the positive side of a seven-four
score-line.
Bari
McKenzie (pictured left), John Downes, Tim McKay and Chris Gracie
all got on the score sheet for the Sharks and Bari McKenzie was
named man-of-the-match. Carl Culley scored the final four Warriors
goals, all on break-aways, on his way to Whitleys’ man-of-the
–match. The Sharks out-shot the Warriors fifty-three to thirty-seven
in the contest but found it hard to hit the back of the net for most
of the night.
In
the other semi-final the Dundee Stars caused the shock of the season
when handing the Fife Flyers their first defeat of the season with a
superb and well deserved seven-four victory. The Taysiders were
odds-on to take the title in front of their own fans in the final,
but like the Sharks before them, they came away frustrated by their
performance as the Warriors ran out five-four winners in a thrilling
and closely contested final.
Sharks
netminder Scott McMeeken saved eighteen out of twenty-one shots for
a 85.71 save percentage before being replaced by Dewar Anderson who
saved thirteen out of seventeen for a 76.47 percentage.
