An
under-strength Black Bull of Moffat sponsored Solway Sharks squad endured their first pointless weekend of
the season last Saturday and Sunday as they lost to the Whitley
Warriors and Fife Flyers respectively.
It was also the
first time the Sharks have lost back-to-back games this season as
the team has accumulated an overall record of 23 wins, eight losses,
with a single draw, to sit in third place of both competitions.
On Saturday at the
Ice Bowl, the Warriors scored five second period goals to lead the
way to an 8-5 victory in a bad-tempered affair. Eight different
Warriors scored their goals as the Tyneside club moved into second
place in the Northern League.
With the score 8-2
entering the final period the Sharks scored three goals in just
under five minutes to pull the game back within reach but could not
add to their comeback despite out-shooting the visitors 35-26 in the
contest.
Forward Tim McKay
was injured and forced to leave the game in the third period when
the Warriors’ Karl Culley kneed the Carlisle native in the thigh.
The hit went
un-penalised but Sharks’ Alan Crane took the law into his own hands
by boxing the Whitley captain to the floor. Bobby Chalmers also was
ejected after a bout of fisticuffs with Andrew Carter who was also
sent packing.
Man
of the match for the Sharks on Saturday against the Warriors was
Neal Haworth (pictured above) and was presented with the award by
Scott Edgar, past player with the Sharks now in the Royal Marines
serving in Afghanistan.
Sharks stats from Whitley game: Neal Haworth and Bari McKenzie both
two goals and no assists, Mark Gallagher 1+1, Kevin Conway 0+5,
Chris Gracie 0+2 and Robert Chalmers
0+1. Sharks netminder Scott McMeeken saved eight out of the ten shots
that he faced (Save percentage 80%) after replacing Dewar Anderson who saved ten out of
the sixteen shots that he faced (Save percentage 62.50%).
