The
Solway Sharks, sponsored by the black Bull of Moffat, hosted the
Moray Tornadoes on Saturday night in the second home game of the
season at Dumfries Ice Bowl. Despite a much improved effort from
the Elgin side and a sterling effort from their man-of-the-match
netminder, Craig Johnstone the Sharks ran out seven - four
winners. Johnstone faced seventy shots and
steered away sixty-three of them in a goaltending clinic that
had Shark fans concerned that the unthinkable upset might be on
the cards. In
front of a disappointing attendance, the home side jumped out to
an early lead as Tim McKay assisted by Shaun Kippin, Kippin from
Corrie Telfer and Jamie Kerr (pictured above) aided by Chris
Gracie all found the back of the Tornadoes net within eight
minutes of the start. Moray then hit back with two goals either
side of a nice effort from Telfer as Gracie assisted again to
send the teams to the interval with the Sharks leading by four
goals to two.
The Sharks were missing goaltender Scott McMeeken and Ross Edgar
but still no-one in the building could have predicted what the
second period had in store. An unbelievable shot advantage of
thirty-one to fourteen to the Sharks did not distance them from
the visitors but astonishingly brought the score to within one.
Moray scored first before Kevin Conway assisted by Tim McKay
restored the Sharks two goal lead. But Moray once again pulled
back to within one through captain Kevin Russell who completed
his hat-trick against Sharks' netminder Chris McKay with only
thirty seconds left on the period clock.
The third period saw the home side
seal the victory despite a hard working display from their
opponents. Chambers set up Bari McKenzie and Kevin Conway scored
his second tally of the evening with Tim McKay and Alan Crane
notching assists.
Hilda Winter from sponsors PET Processors UK
presented the man-of-the-match award to Solway Sharks' Tim
McKay.
