The
Black Bull of Moffat sponsored Solway Sharks completed
back-to-back victories over the Dundee Stars at Dundee Ice Arena
on Sunday night when Bari McKenzie scored with just fifty-two
seconds remaining in the game. The four points secured in these
two games enabled the Sharks to climb back into second place,
behind the Fife Flyers, in the Northern League table.
The usually boisterous home support was left
eerily silent when McKenzie latched onto a Kevin Conway
(pictured left) pass and lifted the puck over a wandering Stars'
netminder as the Sharks moved five points clear of the Tayside
club in the table. The Stars had previously tied the match
midway through the third period when Stars' Canadian born
forward Patric Lochi bounced a puck in off a Sharks' defenseman
that handcuffed netminder Dewar Anderson. That tying effort set
up an exciting finish that had both sets of supporters on the
edge of their seats following a thrilling encounter.
Solway were the stronger team throughout the game
and never trailed as the Stars played catch-up all night. The
Sharks struck first when Conway hammered home Neal Haworth
pass on the powerplay before Dundee levelled to end the first
period at one goal apiece.
The visitors then went two ahead via another
powerplay marker as Shaun Kippin produced a fine individual
effort to find the mesh just minutes before Conway made it
three. The Stars scored late in the period to pull it back to
within one and set up a mouth-watering final twenty minutes.
Sharks statistics were. Kevin
Conway two goals and one assist, Bari McKenzie 1+1, Shaun Kippin 1+0,
Neal Haworth 0+2, and Gordon Horne 0+1. Solway Sharks netminder Dewar Anderson
saved thirty-two of the thirty five shots he faced and Kevin
Conway received the Man of the Match award.
