The
Solway Sharks, sponsored by the Black Bull of Moffat, got back
on track with a rare victory over the Paisley Pirates. Sharks
controlled a well played game and ran out 6-2 winners in a
double points match at the Ice Bowl. The victory improves the
Sharks' record to five wins and two losses in the Northern
League, both losses have come at the hands of the league
leaders, away at the Fife Flyers.
In what may be the Pirates last game, as they
search for a new home, the Sharks started fast recording
eighteen shots on the Pirates goal in the first period. Despite
this Solway only led by two goals to one at the break with goals
from Tim McKay assisted by Bobby Chalmers and Kevin Conway,
Chris Conoboy replied for the visitors.
The second period started with three strikes
within five minutes and this set the pace for the remainder of
the match. First Paisley levelled through Stuart McCraig within
the first minute. However, this was quickly answered with
strikes by Chalmers and Tim McKay with his second which gave the
Sharks a two goal lead which they would not relinquish for the
remainder of the match. Tim McKay was given an assist on the
Chalmers goal while Euan Edgar and Kevin Conway performed the
same service for Tim.
The game continued at a good pace and the Sharks added two more
goals as Bobby Chalmers was on target again assisted by Bari
McKenzie and Kevin Conway before Wayne Slater ended the scoring
in the last minute, netting on a pass from Chalmers.
Dewar Anderson (pictured above) replaced Scott
McMeeken in the Sharks net for the third and final period and he
kept the Pirates at bay stopping all thirteen shots that he
faced. Scott McMeeken saved eighteen out of twenty (Save
percentage 90:00%) and the
Sharks as a team fired in a total of forty-nine shots.
Man of the Match awards were
presented by Alana Douglas on behalf of the match sponsors, the
Townhouse Hotel. Receiving
the awards were Corrie Telfer for the Sharks and Graham McCamley
for the Pirates.
