The
Solway Sharks, sponsored by the black Bull of Moffat, continued
their run of home wins as they blew the Pirates off the ice in
an emphatic twelve-two win on Saturday night at Dumfries Ice
Bowl. A large crowd turned out for this festive fixture and it
was goals galore to keep them cheering. Unfortunately it was
also penalties galore, one hundred and sixteen minutes in total
were racked up by the two teams. The pirates iced four former Sharks players, now with the Dumfries Demons, to bolster
their squad, as their continued problems mean that they still
have no home ice for either training or games.
Sharks started strongly and
were three up midway through the first period. A short
distraction interrupted the flow when Thomson and Seddon
(pictured above right) had a bout of fisticuffs but there were no
further scores and the period ended with the home side three-nil
ahead.
The Sharks played most of the
second period short-handed and John Downes was sent for an early
shower when the referee didn't appreciate Downe's opinion on the
validity of his calls. However, two more goals sent the home
side into the second intermission with a five-nil lead.
The third and final period saw a reduction in the
penalty calls against the Pirates but the Sharks continued to
visit the penalty box and had to kill several more powerplay
opportunities for the visitors. Paisley scored two consolation
goals midway through the final session but the home team replied
with seven of their own.
Man-of-the-match for the Pirates was Graham
McCamley and for the Sharks Scott McMeeken picked up the award.
After the game coach Doherty said: "It was a good
result and gave us another important win in the Scottish
National League. The number of penalties only served to spoil
the flow of the game, and put a number of players fairly close
to suspension but there is not too much we can do about it."
Sharks statistics from the game were as follows:
Kevin Conway four goals and one assist, Shaun Kippin and Bari McKenzie
both 2+0, Tim McKay, John Downes, Robert Chalmers and Struan Tonnar
all 1+0, Mark Gallagher 0+5, Chris Gracie and Corrie Telfer both 0+2,
Neal Haworth and Cammy Currie both 0+1. Sharks netminder Scott McMeeken
saved twenty of the twenty-two shots that he faced (Save
percentage 95.24%).
