The Solway
Sharks, sponsored by the Black Bull of Moffat, did not play
their best hockey of the year but still managed to sweep aside
Blackburn seven to three in front of 300 fans at the Dumfries
Ice Bowl on Saturday night. Sharks out-shot the Lancashire side
fourteen to eleven in the opening period and took a two-nil lead
after defenseman John Ballentyne and Ross Edgar both found the
net with slapshots from the blueline that beat Hawks goalie
Daniel Brittel.
Sharks again controlled the second
period and added three more to their lead as Bari McKenzie,
Kevin Conway and Euan Edgar, with a nice individual effort, all
scored to put the home team up five-nil heading into the second
intermission.
Play really opened up in the
final period as
Blackburn fought back and both teams combined for a very high
thirty-seven shots on goal resulting in five goals in six
minutes. Blackburn scored first through Sam Dunford with 9:01
left to play and that started the goals bonanza as Sharks fired
back with two of their own forty and fifty-eight seconds later.
First Corrie Telfer scored with a diving effort which was
followed by a great top-corner effort from Cammy Currie to
increase the Sharks lead to seven-one. Shortly after this the
Hawks got two more consolation goals from Ryan O'Reilly and
Richard Bentham, both on powerplays, to make the final score
Sharks seven, Hawks three.
Sharks'
netminder, Scott McMeeken, had a good game in goal saving
thirty-eight out of the forty-one shots that he faced (Save
percentage 92.68%) while the
Sharks as a team managed a total of forty-four on the Blackburn
net. The game was sponsored by the Crichton University Campus
and on their behalf Caroline Bell presented Ross Edgar (pictured
left) with the man-on the-match award for the home side. Sharks
statistics on the night were: Cammy Currie, Kevin Conway, Euan Edgar,
Corrie Telfer and
Bari McKenzie all one goal and one assist, John Ballentyne and Ross Edgar
both 1+0, Mark Gallagher 0+2, Chris Gracie and Wayne Slater both 0+1.
