The early face-off time of 5 p.m. on
Sunday was welcomed by all but if any of the Black Bull of
Moffat sponsored Solway Sharks’ fans were slightly
optimistic that the travelling Flyers would be hindered by their
early departure they soon found this out to be false.
Fife dominated
the contest from the drop of the puck and showed their class as
they cemented their claim as the number one team in the country. Flyers have sent
a strong message to their two nearest rivals in the table by
following up a 7-2 victory at Dundee Stars the week before with
a convincing 8-1 win at the Ice Bowl. All three teams
top the SNL with 10 points but Fife has yet to be beaten, Stars
have lost once, and Sharks twice.
The Kirkcaldy
outfit jumped out to a quick 4-0 first period lead and never
looked back as forwards John Haig, Andy Samuel, and Stephen King
had a field day against a disappointing Solway side. Mark Gallagher
had the lone strike for the Sharks at the end of the second
period that sent the teams into the intermission with the score
6-1.
Dewar Anderson
took over from Scott McMeeken in the Sharks’ goal for the third
period in his first action of the season and although he stopped
a Samuel penalty-shot he could not stop the Flyers from adding
to their lead.
Sharks coach
Doherty had this to say following the weekend: “We need to sort
out our team defending against the attack of the big clubs
before we have a chance at beating them. “We either gave
up too many odd man rushes or backed right in on our goal crease
with no support from our forwards and teams of this calibre will
take you apart if you do this. “Fife are very
good and it seemed like they had seven or eight skaters out
there some shifts. But it’s a long season and we still have at
least seven more head-to-heads to try and figure them out.”
