As
has often been the case this season the Solway Sharks, sponsored by the
Black Bull of Moffat, and Fife Flyers
provided stiff opposition for each other in what turned into a pulsating
Northern League tie. Not many in the crowd would have envisaged how close
the game would become as the Flyers dominated most of the first period
sitting comfortably 3-0 ahead at the break.
The Sharks came out in
determined mood for the second period and hard (but fair) challenges came
thick and fast as the Flyers proved that they had no intention of giving up
their perfect record this season. With 12:50 gone in the period Kevin Conway
(pictured left) broke free and scored the first of his two goals
on the night with a fierce shot past the excellent Daly in the
Flyer goal. By the end of the second period the Sharks
had pulled the score back to 3-4 and the scene was set for a thrilling
finale.
The third period was as tight as the score-line suggests with
both side fighting for every loose puck and no quarter being asked or given
with 5:18 left Tim McKay scored for the Sharks to level the scores at
four goals apiece. As the game moved into the last two minutes the Flyers
broke at speed and John Haig crashed an excellent shot past the helpless
Scott McMeeken in the home goal. For the final few moments the Flyers showed
why they are the best in the league as they controlled most of the
possession even though the Sharks went with six outfield players for the
last thirty seconds.
Man of the match for the Flyers was the outstanding
Blair Daly who performed heroics at times in the Fife goal. Tim McKay took
the honours for the home side.
The views and statistics in this report are
