The Black Bull
of Moffat sponsored Solway Sharks continued their run of home
wins as they dominated the play in a comfortable 9-4 win in
their final game of 2006 on Saturday night at the Ice Bowl.
A large crowd
turned out for this second festive fixture and it was goals
galore to keep them cheering. It took just four seconds
for the Sharks to open their account with a solo effort from
Bari McKenzie. Conway scored minutes later but Edinburgh pulled
the two-goal deficit back as they scored twice is quick
succession.
Sharks went
ahead again with another solo effort this time by Gracie but a
power play to the Capitals gave them the edge and they again
levelled the score. There was nothing to separate the two teams
until Marl Gallagher gave the Sharks the lead just before the
end of the first and the Sharks were one up as they went to the
dressing room.
It was not
until midway through the second period that the Capitals
levelled the score, again on the power play. The power play was
the result of Ross Edgar being sent for an early shower after
protesting about the call against him. Sharks continued to put
pressure on the visitors and added another two goals, the first
through Euan Edgar (pictured left) and the second a solo effort from Chalmers.
The Sharks did manage to kill three other Edinburgh power plays,
but it did not make for very entertaining hockey for the fans.
A two goal-lead
against the fast skating Capitals outfit could easily have been
closed but in the third period the home side did up their play
considerably and they had to for they took no fewer than 32
penalty minutes in the third. Frustration about the lack of
calls for alleged infringements by the visitors led to another
two Sharks players sitting ten minute misconduct penalties. The
number of players in the box only served to strengthen the
determination of the remaining players. Three further goals
scored by Crane, McKenzie and Gallagher sealed the game and gave
the Sharks another two points in the league table.
After the game
Kevin Doherty commented: “The boys got the job done and we
deserved the win. “The number of penalty calls again this week
disrupted the flow of play to the detriment of the game.
Man of the
match for the home team this week was Bari McKenzie and Iain
Bowie for the visitors. The awards were presented by Claire
McKie from the supporters club. Sharks stats
were: Mark Gallagher and Bari McKenzie both two goals and one
assist, Kevin Conway and Chris Gracie both
1+1, Robert Chalmers, Alan Crane and Euan Edgar all 1+0.
