The
Solway Sharks, sponsored by the Black Bull of Moffat, picked up
two more valuable points on Saturday night when they beat
Kilmarnock Avalanche by nine goals to two to stay top of the
Scottish National League table. The Sharks scored three goals in
each of the three periods in Irvine in a match in which they
controlled throughout.
The opening frame started in sticky and scrappy
fashion on the small ice surface at the Magnum Centre, but the
Sharks showed their class as Bari McKenzie (unassisted), Wayne
Slater and Tim McKay on the powerplay all hit the back of the
net. Bari McKenzie and Ross Edgar picked up assists on the
Slater goal and Slater via Kevin Conway helped the McKay effort.
Ian Crockett replied for the Avalanche.
Sharks then took command in the second period
with three unanswered strikes when Shaun Kippin scored
unassisted, Conway was fed by McKenzie (pictured above left) and
Euan Edgar added one on the powerplay with Mark Gallagher and
McKenzie adding assists.
Scott McMeeken gave way to Chris McKay in the
Sharks goal at the start of the final frame and stopped all but
one of the shots he faced as Alan Maitland pulled Kilmarnock to
within four. Play was back and forth until midway through the
last session when Conway and McKay produced further solo efforts
and Steven Gaughan set up Raymond Haslam in the final minute to
cap the victory.
